This is the first book in the fantasy series, The Firstborn's Legacy. Each novel pinpoints the life of an adolescent during a pivotal point in the history of Orrock.
The Maraians have suffered for centuries, enslaved by the cruel Izyphorns. Now, at last, their deity has promised deliverance under the leadership of young Raiballeon—or so she has been told her whole life.
When fifteen-year-old Raiballeon witnessed the murder of an Izyphorn royal and had to flee her home, she thought she had lost everything: Her best friend and fiancé Savi, her family, and her calling to free the Maraians. Exiled from Izyphor, Raiballeon resigned herself to life as a storyteller and as the quasi-servant of the family that sheltered her.
Three years later, Savi unexpectedly reenters her life as the fiancé of her adopted cousin. An enigmatic stranger appears at the same time, asking her to reclaim her calling. But going up against the greatest nation in the world on her own would mean certain death. What is she willing to risk? Does she trust that her deity can protect her? These are questions Raiballeon must answer as she decides whether she can lead Maraiah out of oppression or if her misfortunes have trapped her in insignificance. Meanwhile, she has to figure out how to survive Savi’s upcoming wedding with a smile.
Away west, there used to be,
Upon the land twixt Aimar and sea
Where plains and rolling hills there be,
The people we call Marah.
Not a realm nor kingdom were they,
Nor bonded either by tongue or fay.
The people of Marah, as they say,
Were like the land: Wild and free.
